The Castro Adobe in El Cerrito was destroyed by fire in 1956 but we can still visit the Alvarado Adobe in San Pablo, a reconstruction of an adobe built in 1842 for Dona Gabriéla Berryessa de Castro, mother of Victor Castro, who settled in El Cerrito. Victor’s sister and her husband Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado lived in the San Pablo home.
The Alvarado Adobe was recently stripped of its historical collection by thieves, and the city had contemplated leasing it to a private business. But our friends at the San Pablo society have won permission to continue running it as a museum.
We will also visit the adjacent Blume House, a beautifully furnished 1905 farmhouse.

Meet at the Alvarado Adobe, on San Pablo Avenue just north of Church Lane in San Pablo.
